Creating HOME: Interacting More Successfully With Those Who Have Dementia

An e-course to learn how to bring comfort and joy to loved ones with dementia


This is a must-attend course for anyone who loves or cares for someone with dementia. The course will be led by Paula M. Taliaferro, MGS, LSW, an experienced Outreach & Education Specialist with the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging. Paula holds a Master's Degree in Gerontology, and is a PAC Approved Trainer under Teepa Snow's Positive Approach Certification. She brings over 25 years of experience as a support group facilitator for caregivers of those with dementia, making this a unique opportunity to learn from a seasoned expert in dementia care.

By learning how to engage compassionately and reduce anxiety, you'll help your loved ones feel a sense of purpose and belonging, no matter their cognitive changes.


About the course

This course is offered online through Google Classroom, providing flexibility and easy access from anywhere. The course consists of three live sessions, each designed to build on the last, held on Saturdays, November 9, 16, and 23 at 2-3:30 PM EST. These live sessions will include interactive discussions and Q&A opportunities. If you can't attend live, don't worry—recordings will be made available to all participants after each session. In Google Classroom, you'll also find video lessons, readings, and discussion boards for ongoing support.

    What Dementia Is and What It Is Not: Learn the science behind dementia, its causes, and how it differs from normal aging. Gain a deeper understanding of brain failure and how to identify the signs.
  • Session 2 | November 16, 2-3:30 PM EST
    Understanding Symptoms and Engaging People with Dementia: Explore the wide range of dementia symptoms beyond memory loss and discover creative ways to engage with loved ones, preserving their dignity and purpose.
  • Session 3 | November 23, 2-3:30 PM EST
    Managing Challenging Behaviors and Creating a Safe HOME: Learn practical strategies to handle difficult behaviors, reduce anxiety, and create a secure, familiar environment for people with dementia.

The cost for the course is just $10. To join, simply provide your email address, make the payment in the form to the right and you will be added to the Google Classroom, where you'll find all the Zoom links for the live sessions, along with the videos, materials, and resources. Once enrolled, you'll have access to everything you need, including the live sessions and recorded content, ensuring you can participate at your own pace.


Meet the instructor: Paula M. Taliaferro, MGS, LSW

Paula works part time at the Central Ohio Area Agency on Aging as an
Outreach & Education Specialist. As such, she has presented over 900
workshops in the last decade. Paula holds a Master’s Degree in
Gerontology from Scripps Gerontology Center at Miami University and a License in Social Work in the State of Ohio. She is a PAC Approved Trainer under Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach Certification. She is developer of the “Aging In Ohio” course which is required of many professionals who work with older adults. In addition, she is one two developers of the “Fundamentals of Guardianship” course sponsored by the Ohio Supreme Court’s Judicial College and an Affiliated Trainer with the National Task Group on Intellectual Disabilities and Dementia Practices. She has been a support group facilitator for over 25 years for caregivers for those with dementia.
