Helping a person who hurt me?

“No way!” I thought at first…

Years ago, I was devastated by the actions of a neighbor. She caused me emotional pain, deep hurt and anger.

One day at church I spoke to the priest about it. I mentioned the scripture text about “loving your enemy” (Mt 5:44). I asked him, how can I forgive and love this person?

He knew it was difficult to forgive, but said that I could start by trying to say a prayer for her whenever I felt upset. I trusted his advice and tried to do it.

Months later, I heard that this person was moving out of state. I was glad but still not peaceful.

About a year later, a friend told me that this lady needed financial support. My first thought was “No way!”

I then recalled when Jesus said, “Love your enemy; do good to those who hurt you.” I decided to offer some money.

Days later, my friend told me that the woman was so touched that I was willing to help her. Moments later, I felt God’s presence and healing love. God looked at me and took away all my hurt and sadness and I actually felt a love for her.

I was totally healed.
